Can you imagine loading a motor grader on or off a flatbed trailer using a dock? Most engine classifiers won't fit on a flatbed trailer anyway, so it's not really a concern. Since the best way to load or drive a motor grader is to drive it, the best choices for transporting your construction grader are ladder trailers and RGN trailers.

Deck-step trailers usually cost a little less than RGN trailers, but availability can be an issue. Sometimes it's worth paying a bit more for a ready-to-roll RGN trailer, rather than waiting for a step-deck trailer to become available. Anyway, the two best options for placing your engine classes are:

Lowboy trailers can also be used to haul motor graders - if you have a crane to load and unload. For the most part, heavy equipment needs to be lifted on a low boy trailer. It is much more difficult (and often impossible) to drive long equipment on or off a lowboy trailer than it is to load or unload an RGN trailer or step deck trailer.

The Heavy Extended Mobility Transport Truck is an 8 x 8 diesel off-road tactical truck used by the US military. Nicknamed the "Dragon Wagon", the HEMTT first entered service with the Army in 1985, replacing the M520 Goer trucks. There are over 13,000 HEMTTs in operation today.

The primary mission of the HEMTT is to offer heavy transport capabilities for combat vehicles and weapon systems replenishment. Its large cargo capacity and off-road capabilities make it a major logistics player.

Introduced in 1985, the HEMTTs are the backbone of the US military's logistics fleet. After 1991 the efficiency of the vehicles started to decrease. In 2001 the HEMTT Reuse Program was established by Oshkosh and the US Army. Under the scheme new vehicles and recapitalization were given to many high priority units. By 2003 around 621 trucks had been pulled up for recycling.

In December 2002 the R3 (recapture, repair and return) program was developed by the US Army and Oshkosh to increase the HEMTT turnover.

The program reduced the turnaround to 100 days including shipping time and was a huge success. After the R3 program the vehicles received the R1 designation on their model numbers.

In 2005 Oshkosh Corporation began developing the next generation HEMTT A3 vehicles after receiving a grant from the US Department of Defense. The vehicles cleared performance and durability tests over the next 18 months.

In February 2008 the first modification contract of the HEMTT A2 was sent by the US Army. The second modification contract designated the HEMTT A2 vehicles as HEMTT A4s.

Oshkosh has a total of 11 HEMTT variants in six configurations. There are five cargo trucks, a fuel service truck variant, two tractor versions, a load handling system variant, a common bridge transport variant and a recovery vehicle with cranes and winches.

Common features of the variants include front and rear towing eyes, black lights, 24-volt electrical systems and rear towing hooks for towing trailers and artillery.

The cargo variants, the M977 A2 and M985 A2 models, are used to transport equipment, especially ammunition. The rear parts of the vehicles are supported by cranes that are 33.4 feet long, 8 feet wide and 9.3 feet high.

The M977 A2 large repair parts transport variant (LRPT) is used to transport large repair parts. It is equipped with a crane on the back of the chassis, which has a press of 2,500 lbs.

The M978 variant is a bulk carrier with a 2,500 gal tank and a fuel resupply module. It is used to refuel track vehicles, wheeled vehicles and helicopters.

The M983 A2 light equipment transport variant (LET) is used to transport light equipment and ammunition. The M983 A2 Patriot Tractor variant is used to carry Pershing II and Patriot missile systems. It has the same features as the M983 A2 LET variant.

The M984 A2 Recovery Truck (Wrecker) variant is a 10t tactical truck wrecker with a heavy duty crane and recovery winch. It can get disabled vehicles back in the field in two to three minutes. It is 32.6 feet long and has a 16 foot wheelbase.

The M985 A2 guided missile transport variant (GMT) is used to transport guided missiles. It is 35.5 feet long and is crane mounted with a lifting capacity of 5,400 lbs. at 16.5ft.

The M1120 A2 load handling system (LHS) variant is equipped with the Oshkosh Multilift load handling system that can lift and transport payloads up to 11t. It is 32.7 feet long.

The M1977 A2 common bridge carrier (CBT) is a modified version of the M1120 A2 LHS. It is equipped with horizontal racks to carry bridge components such as the M15 Bridge Adapter Pallet and the M14 Better Boat Cradle.

A HEMTT can traverse tough terrain carrying combat vehicles and weapons to the field. HEMTT versions are equipped with powerful front tandem steering systems that create a wheelbase of 5.3m. With a maximum payload of 13t, they can climb a 60% gradient and ford at a depth of 1.2m. They deliver a cruising range of 644km and can be easily carried in a C130 or C141.
